He was on his way outbye at the end of his shift, and was passing along a siding in the main haulage road when the roof came down over the whole width of the road and for a length of several yards, burying him beneath it. The roof had been supported on balks set on props at each end with lagging timber over. The average distance between each setting of timber was not more than three feet. No sign had been noticed of any movement in the roof or sides prior to the fall and the timber supports were said to have been renewed within the previous six weeks.3
